Less than a week later, Skygexx was sitting in his closet-sized ready room about to claw the bulkheads in frustration. Things were slowly moving forward in both of the construction arenas, true to the word of the bureaucrats. The first sections of the new cruiser’s keel were being laid down, but reports he was getting indicated that less than forty percent of the workforce had been rounded up for the whole endeavor, something that vexed him greatly. So much time had passed, why was this taking so long to get moving? In Tyseus, the whole keel would be out and workers would have already started on the ribs. Of course, discipline there was much more harsh there, but he had no problem with that. Things got done and the discipline kept things and people in line. Merit was rewarded, but there were no squabbles between departments, like there was here. Lord Verrikoth had his own single, focused vision for the future and he was moving his resources toward that future.

This here was just anarchy. Everyone had an opinion and a right to be heard, no matter how trivial and small they were.

And Skygexx was thoroughly sick of it. Sokann had just sent a report and he had just finished reading it. It was about the factory on the surface, where the Centurions were to be constructed. The power had been turned on and a work crew had begun bringing the lines and all of the construction bots back online. Sokann reported that the whole factory had been shut down and lay dormant for more than three years now. The government had built the system defense squadrons and then summarily shut down the whole complex, disbursing the workers and various resources to other projects, with very little in the way of warning or explanation. As such, the devices and lines had decayed somewhat, vandals had gotten in and damaged several sections and components and stolen a few more. Surely, though, a factory of that size could be repurposed for civilian applications, even if it wasn’t to be used for making of more starfighters.

But despite his orders from the Warlord, Skygexx’s patience with the dawdling and silky attitudes of the locals had finally run out. He couldn’t just sit here anymore, officially providing support and protection for the shipyard and various other orbital industries. But he couldn’t just leave, either. Ironhide was under orders to stay here in Hecate, secure the starfighters and then hang around until the work on the cruiser was well underway. That was the sticking point. Lord Verrikoth hadn’t said that he needed to remain until the ship was completed, no. Just until it was “well along its way”. It was maddening because he really had no idea what that meant.

The console at his desk beeped and he gave a buzz of frustration. It never ended. He stepped over to it and saw that he had a transmission from the surface. He growled and pressed the “accept” command. A display activated and the image of Secretary Flamberge appeared.
